FAQ

We love it when clients ask tanning questions

We truly enjoy educating people about the benefits of spray tanning and how to make the most of their tan. Recently, a few of the same questions have repeatedly popped up during our client visits, so I thought I’d share my answers here in the likely event that others out there have wondered the same thing.

Is spray tanning safe?
YES, the FDA approved Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar cane derivative that results into a tan, was approved for safety in 1973.  When applied to the skin, DHA penetrates only the top layer of skin.

Will your products stain clothing or bed sheets?
We generally recommend that clients wear garments that are loose fitting and dark in color after treatment.  If any color does get transferred to material, it can be easily washed in a normal cycle and should not stain.

How long will the tan last?
5 to 7 days depending on how well you moisturize at home and follow the before and after guidelines.  Try not to exfoliate your skin and stay away from products with high alcohol content.  These products will slowly strip away your tan.  A spray tan fades, just like a tan from the sun.  As your body naturally exfoliates, your tan will fade.  Remember proper hydration & moisturizing your skin is key.

What do I wear during my Tanning appointment?
You may wear a dark, snug fitting swimsuit, or undergarment.  Some women choose to have no tan lines at all. Men may not tan nude.  We do ask that men wear some type of undergarment.  Clients under he age of 18 must have a legal guardian present and may not under any circumstances tan nude.

Are there any areas that I should pay particular attention to when I exfoliate before my spray tan appointment?
Absolutely! You should exfoliate your entire body thoroughly, but you should pay extra attention to the area around your ankles, toes, and knuckles. If you don’t exfoliate in those areas and move ahead with your spray tan, you won’t notice a problem. But give it a few days and you will. Once your tan begins to fade, those areas will really stand out. Any areas on your body that are naturally a little more course will fade faster, so I always ask my clients to pay extra attention to their ankles, toes, and knuckles. A tip I just learned from a Spray Tan Artist in New Jersey (Nicole’s Tan Go), try using baking soda and scrubbing gloves seems to exfoliate your body very well and for pennies.

Should I shave my legs before a spray tan?
Yes & No. The moisturizing strip and the shaving cream or gel or lotion used leaves a barrier on the skin. This can prevent the active ingredient in the spray tanning solution from developing properly or at all. It is best to shave eight hours or the night before tanning and rinse the shaved area well. If you are in a pinch and you have to shave the same day, I strong recommend using a disposable razor with the moisturizing strip and soap. Or you can always ask your Tanologist® to spray you quickly with “Prep Spray”, which will neutralize and balance the PH of your skin. ($5.00 charge)

If possible, I recommend that my clients get facials or wax at least two days prior to spray tanning. Your pores and skin need a chance to recover after a facial or waxing. NEVER get a facial or wax after you spray tan it will completely remove your tan in that area. As you can imagine, that’s not a great look.

What is the developing time of the tanning solutions you use?
A Spray Tan California we utilize several products. For traditional Spray Tan to fully develop, it takes between eight and twelve hours after application. This means that during that time you cannot come into contact with any water at all. However, one of my favorite products is Aviva’s 30 minute city tan or rapid tan. (Las Vegas, Miami or Hollywood) I offer these quick developing solutions for when you don’t have time to wait around for 8-12 hours. These specialty products range from 1 to 6 hours developing time. (This rapid process has strict guidelines; see your Tanologist® for special instructions.)
